Description
Solid 9k yellow gold hoops, with pear cut diamonds set in black rhodium and fastened with a double lock. The pair photographed has a 0.8 carat diamond in each ear.
The dark setting is doing something specific. A diamond reads brighter against black than against gold, the way a photograph reads brighter in a dark mount, so blackening the setting makes the stone look whiter and livelier rather than warmer.
It is also historically correct. Georgian jewellers set diamonds in silver rather than gold, because silver suited a white stone better, and that silver darkened over the two centuries that followed. Every genuinely antique Georgian diamond piece has a dark setting for that reason. Black rhodium gets you there deliberately rather than by waiting two hundred years.
