How to Propose
Share
A proposal is one of the most significant moments most people will ever plan. The pressure to get it right is real — and completely understandable. But after helping hundreds of couples through the ring-choosing process at Daily Diamonds, we've noticed something consistent: the proposals people remember most aren't the most elaborate ones. They're the most considered ones.
Here's what we've learned.
Start with the ring — earlier than you think
If you're planning a custom ring, the timeline matters. At Daily Diamonds, custom pieces take approximately six weeks from design approval to completion. Factor in the design consultation and any adjustments, and you should ideally begin the process at least ten to twelve weeks before your intended proposal date.
If that timeline feels tight, our ready-to-wear collection offers beautiful options that can be with you much sooner. We can also create a placeholder ring for the moment itself, with the custom piece to follow — many couples find this a meaningful part of the story.
How to choose the ring without ruining the surprise
This is the question we hear most often. A few approaches that work well:
The indirect approach — pay attention to the jewellery they already wear. The metal, the style, the scale. Someone who wears delicate, minimal pieces every day will likely want a ring that fits within that world. Someone who reaches for statement earrings probably isn't looking for a simple solitaire.
Enlist a trusted friend — a best friend or close sibling who knows their taste can be invaluable. They may even know exactly what's been saved or mentioned. This is the most reliable method and, done well, the partner never suspects.
Ask subtly — some couples browse together before a formal proposal, treating the ring as a shared decision from the start. This isn't for everyone, but for couples who make most decisions together it can feel completely natural.
Come to us — Annabel and Isabella have helped guide countless partners through this exact process. Share what you know about their style, their lifestyle, and the pieces they already love. We'll help you find or design something they'll wear forever.
The proposal itself
The setting matters less than the feeling. A proposal on a mountaintop that feels forced is far less memorable than a quiet moment at home that feels entirely true to who you both are.
A few things worth thinking about:
Where are they most themselves? A favourite walk, a restaurant that means something to you both, a place that features in your story. The more personal the setting, the more the moment will mean.
Keep it private if they're private. Public proposals are beautiful when the person loves being the centre of attention. For someone who doesn't, a very public moment can feel overwhelming rather than romantic. Know your person.
Think about the words. You don't need a speech. You need something true. The most moving proposals we've heard about were simple — a few sentences that captured exactly why this person, exactly why now. Write something down if it helps, even if you never read from it.
Have someone capture it if you can. Not for social media — for you. The moment passes very quickly and a photograph or video is something you'll both be grateful for.
After the yes
Once the excitement settles, there are a few practical things worth knowing.
If the ring needs resizing — which is more common than not — bring it back to us. Resizing is straightforward and we'd rather it fits perfectly than sits in a drawer because it's slightly too large or small.
If you've proposed with a placeholder and the custom piece is still being made, that's a lovely part of the story. Many partners enjoy being involved in the final design decisions at this stage — choosing the exact stone, refining a detail, making it truly collaborative.
And if you're thinking about wedding bands already — reach out. We make those too, and designing pieces that work together from the start is always the most considered approach.
Wherever you are in the process — whether the ring is chosen, the date is set, or you're still at the very beginning — we're here. Reach out to Annabel or Isabella and we'll take it from there.
