How to Design a Custom Engagement Ring

Designing a custom engagement ring sounds daunting. Most people have never done it before, have no idea where to start, and are worried about getting it wrong. The truth is, the process is far more straightforward — and far more enjoyable — than most people expect.

Here's exactly what it looks like at Daily Diamonds.

Start with a feeling, not a specification

You don't need to arrive with a fully formed brief. Most of our clients come to us with nothing more than a few saved images, a vague sense of style, or a stone shape they keep coming back to. That's more than enough.

What helps is thinking about how the person who'll wear it lives. Do they have an active lifestyle? A more minimal aesthetic? Do they lean classic or contemporary? Are they the kind of person who'd want something no one else has?

The answers to those questions tell us more than any technical specification ever could.

The process, step by step

1. The first conversation

Everything begins with a conversation — by email or WhatsApp, wherever feels most natural. We'll ask about your vision, lifestyle, preferences, and timeline. There's no pressure and no commitment at this stage. We just want to understand what you're looking for.

2. Stone selection

Once we understand your direction, we'll talk about the centre stone. This is usually the biggest decision — stone shape, type (natural diamond, lab-grown diamond, moissanite, or a coloured gemstone), and size. We'll guide you through the options and help you understand what different choices look like in practice.

3. Design and renders

Once the stone is chosen, our designers create digital renders of your ring — photorealistic images that show you exactly how the finished piece will look from every angle. You'll see it before a single gram of gold is poured.

This is where the magic happens. Most clients make small adjustments at this stage — a slightly thinner band, a different prong style, a touch more detail. It's your ring, and we don't move forward until it's exactly right.

4. The making

Once the design is approved, your ring enters production in our Sydney workshop. The process takes approximately six weeks from approval to completion.

5. Delivery

Your finished ring arrives in our signature packaging, ready for the moment you've been planning.

What does a custom ring cost?

Custom doesn't mean more expensive — it means the budget goes entirely toward what you've chosen, with nothing wasted on retail markups or mass-production overheads.

Our custom engagement rings start from $5,000 NZD, and the final price depends on the stone, metal, and complexity of the design. We work across a wide range of budgets and will always be honest with you about what's achievable within yours.

Is a custom ring right for you?

If the person you're proposing to has a strong sense of personal style, wears jewellery every day, or has ever said "I'd want something a bit different" — a custom ring is almost certainly the right choice.

The ring they'll wear for the rest of their life should feel like it was made for them. Because it was.
