The Birthstone Guide: Finding the Stone That's Yours

There's something quietly personal about a birthstone. A stone chosen not for trend or fashion but for the simple fact of when you were born — or when someone you love was. It's one of the oldest forms of personalised jewellery, and one that has never really gone out of style.

Here's a guide to every birthstone, and how to wear them well.

January — Garnet

Deep red and richly saturated, garnet is one of the most striking of the birthstones. It's often associated with warmth, passion, and energy. Despite its dramatic colour, garnet works beautifully in understated settings — a simple bezel pendant or a slim stacking ring lets the stone speak without overwhelming.

February — Amethyst

Amethyst ranges from pale lilac to deep violet, and its versatility is part of its enduring appeal. It pairs beautifully with yellow gold — the warmth of the metal brings out the richness of the stone. A pair of amethyst studs or a delicate amethyst pendant is one of the most wearable pieces in the birthstone category.

March — Aquamarine

Cool, clear, and quietly luminous, aquamarine is one of the most elegant birthstones. Its pale blue-green colour sits effortlessly alongside diamonds and looks particularly beautiful set in white gold or platinum. March babies tend to love their stone deeply — aquamarine has a serene quality that's genuinely hard not to be drawn to.

April — Diamond

April's birthstone is the diamond — which gives those born in April a straightforward brief and an enormous range of options. A diamond pendant, a pair of diamond studs, or a custom diamond ring are all natural choices. At Daily Diamonds, almost everything we make features a diamond in some form.

May — Emerald

Rich, vivid green and unmistakably luxurious, emerald is one of the most coveted coloured stones in fine jewellery. It suits bold, confident wearers — someone who isn't afraid of a stone that announces itself. Emerald pairs beautifully with yellow gold and looks striking as a bezel-set pendant or an east-west ring.

June — Pearl or Alexandrite

June has two birthstones. Pearl is the classic — luminous, timeless, and with a softness that no other stone quite replicates. Alexandrite is rarer and more extraordinary: a stone that appears green in daylight and shifts to red or purple under incandescent light. If you know a June birthday, alexandrite is one of the most surprising and memorable gift choices available.

July — Ruby

Ruby is the birthstone of passion and intensity. Deep red, deeply saturated, and historically one of the most prized of all gemstones. A ruby set in yellow gold has a warmth and richness that feels almost regal. For July birthdays, a custom ruby ring or pendant is one of the most personal pieces we create.

August — Peridot

Peridot's vivid lime green is unlike any other stone — it's bright, fresh, and entirely its own. It suits summer dressing beautifully and looks particularly striking set simply, where its unusual colour can be fully appreciated. Not everyone knows their August stone, which makes peridot jewellery a genuinely surprising gift.

September — Sapphire

Blue sapphire is one of the most beloved stones in fine jewellery — and September's birthstone. From the palest ice blue to the deepest midnight, the range within sapphire alone is remarkable. Teal sapphires have become particularly sought-after in recent years. We work with sapphire regularly at Daily Diamonds, both as centre stones in custom engagement rings and in everyday fine jewellery.

October — Opal or Tourmaline

Opal is extraordinary — no two stones are alike, and the way they shift and shimmer with colour is unlike anything else in the gemstone world. October also claims tourmaline, which comes in almost every colour imaginable, from deep pink to forest green. Both stones suit someone who appreciates the unconventional.

November — Citrine or Topaz

November's stones are warm and golden — citrine in its amber yellow, and topaz in a range from pale sky blue to deep honey. Both are approachable, wearable, and suit everyday pieces beautifully. A citrine pendant layered with a gold chain is one of the most effortlessly wearable combinations in fine jewellery.

December — Tanzanite or Blue Topaz

Tanzanite is rare, found only in a single location in Tanzania, and its blue-violet colour is extraordinary. Blue topaz is more accessible and equally beautiful — a clear, vivid blue that photographs beautifully. Both suit December's winter palette and look striking set in white gold.

Birthstone jewellery as a gift

A birthstone piece is one of the most personal gifts you can give — more considered than a generic necklace, more intimate than a voucher. At Daily Diamonds we create custom birthstone pieces to order: rings, pendants, necklaces, and earrings featuring any stone, in any metal, designed around the person receiving it.

Reach out to Annabel or Isabella to begin. A birth month and a sense of the person's style is all we need to get started.
