How to Care for Your Fine Jewellery
Share
Fine jewellery is made to be worn. Kept in a box, it's just an object — worn every day, it becomes part of you. But like anything of quality, it benefits from a little care and attention.
Here's how to keep your Daily Diamonds pieces — and any fine jewellery — looking exactly as they should.
Everyday wear
Gold and diamonds are remarkably durable, but there are a few situations worth avoiding.
Remove your jewellery before:
- Swimming in the ocean or a pool. Saltwater and chlorine can gradually dull the finish of gold and affect certain gemstones over time.
- Applying perfume, moisturiser, or hairspray. These products can leave a residue on stones and settings that dulls their brilliance.
- Heavy physical work or exercise. Physical impact won't damage a well-made piece in normal circumstances, but it's good practice to remove fine rings before lifting weights or any activity that might knock them against hard surfaces.
- Sleeping, if your ring has a delicate or intricate setting. It's not essential, but it reduces unnecessary wear over time.
Cleaning at home
A gentle clean every few weeks makes a significant difference to how your pieces look. Here's the simplest method:
Fill a small bowl with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Place your jewellery in the bowl and let it soak for 10–15 minutes. Use a soft toothbrush — a baby toothbrush is ideal — to gently clean around the setting, under the stone, and along the band. Rinse thoroughly under warm running water and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
This is safe for diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, and moissanite in gold settings. Avoid this method for pearls, opals, and certain softer gemstones.
Storage
When you're not wearing your jewellery, store each piece separately. Gold can scratch against gold, and diamonds can scratch most other materials — including other jewellery. A soft pouch or a lined jewellery box with individual compartments is ideal.
Your Daily Diamonds pieces come in individual packaging — keeping them in their original pouches when not being worn is the easiest approach.
Professional cleaning and servicing
Even with regular home cleaning, we recommend having your fine jewellery professionally cleaned and checked once a year. A jeweller will check the security of settings — particularly the prongs around a centre stone — and catch any issues before they become problems.
This is especially important for rings worn every day. Prongs can wear down gradually over time and a loose stone is far better caught by a jeweller than lost.
Resizing and repairs
If your ring ever needs resizing, or a setting needs attention, always take it to a qualified jeweller. Attempting repairs at home — or taking a fine piece to a non-specialist — risks damaging what should last a lifetime.
If you purchased your piece through Daily Diamonds, reach out to Annabel or Isabella directly. We're always happy to advise.
A final note
The best thing you can do for your jewellery is wear it. Fine jewellery is not for saving — it's for living in. The small marks that come with a life well-lived are part of the story of a piece, not damage to it.
